![]() ![]() ![]() In 1862, Cary went to Fort Monroe to request the return of so-called “contraband” people who had escaped slavery by fleeing to the Union-held fort. Before that, he served in the Confederate Army. John Baytop Cary was Richmond’s first school superintendent. Cary’s namesake was called out in June by the Virginia unit of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for his role in the Civil War. Some of the schools to be renamed have already been in the spotlight. “I cannot imagine how justice was dispensed when you are an avid member of a white supremacist group,” board member Ann Cherry said. While on the bench in Hampton, according to the committee’s report, he ruled that county officials could deny the right to vote to Black people based on arbitrary tests. While he was a judge in Hampton, he was a member of a local “Anglo-Saxon Club,” a white supremacist group. The school’s namesake served as Hampton city attorney, 11th Circuit Court judge and on the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia from 1936-67. When asked by board chair Joe Kilgore during Tuesday’s meeting, several board members put Spratley near the top of their lists. The report, complied by district staff and representatives from the Hampton History Museum, breaks down the namesakes of each of the district’s 32 schools. “It’s really hard to decide which ones are the worst in some instances because there were a lot that were concerning,” said board member Stephanie Jackson-Afonja. ![]() The district had set aside money to replace marquees in front of schools in coming years. That’s why board members agreed to just five schools right now, with the option of considering others included in a report to the board in September.ĭistrict leaders expect to spend about $25,000 renaming each elementary school and up to $35,000 to rename middle schools. In next school year’s budget, the board set aside $150,000 for renaming. Per board policy, it will hold a public hearing before renaming any schools. The board didn’t take any formal action Tuesday, the first time it publicly discussed the issue in months. ![]()
